    What causes “Error 2001 error starting Host server: bind() Failed. Error code: 10048; Error invoking ‘StartHostServer’ : bind() failed. Error code: 10048”?

    The following error can be caused by a few different things:  Error 2001 error starting Host server: bind() Failed. Error code: 10048; Error invoking ‘StartHostServer’ : bind() failed. Error code: 10048”

    è Trying to run K2 service in console mode when the K2 service is already running

    o   Check the services

    o   If the K2hostServer service is started stop the service

    o   Try to run the K2 Server in console mode again

    è The K2HostServer’s port typically 5555 is being used by another application

    o   Run netstat –a –b –o to see what application are using the same port the K2HostServer is using.

    o   Give the HostServer a unique port number

    Additionally you can get a better idea on what is happening by modifying the K2hostserverlogging.config located in the BP installation directory.  Modify the K2HostServerlogging.config file -> <LogLocation Name="FileExtension" Active="True" LogLevel="All" /> and restart the K2 service.  This will put all output into a log file which can be reviewed to help determine the root cause.

    Recently, this error occurred in an environment as described below

    Server A  -> K2 Server

    Server B -> SQL server

    Server A -> MOSS NLB

    Server C-> MOSS NLB

    Server D-> MOSS NLB

    Server A ->  IIS

    In this setup the SharePoint Server  Search service modified the HOSTS file on server A to point to the IP address of the MOSS NLB with a rule to add a line to the HOSTS file not there every few minutes.

    Additionally, DEP was changed to Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only (more information on DEP can be found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352).

    Also, it is a good idea to make sure any virus protection software and/or enterprise policy orchestrator is not “protecting” the system from a clean install or blocking necessary ports.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!

    Bonnie
