How to Extract a a Deployed SmartObject Definition File from K2 blackpearl

Sometimes it is necessary to retrieve the SmartObject definition file (SODX) for a SmartObject that has already been deployed to the server.   Perhaps you lost the original SODX and didn't have source control in place.  There are a couple of ways to recover an SODX:

  1. K2 Object Browser in Visual Studio
  2. SmartObject Service Tester (aka Amazing SmartObject Utility)

K2 Object Browser in Visual Studio

1. Open Visual Studio

2. Open/Create a K2 project

3. Open “K2 Object Browser”

4. Select the “Environment” tab

5. Expand SmartObject Server(s)

6. Drill down to the desired SmartObject

7. Right click on it and select “Save to Local”

8. You should now see the SODX in the process.

SmartObject Service Tester (aka Amazing SmartObject Utility)

1. Open the SmartObject Service Tester/Amazing SmartObject utility

NOTE: before version 0807 this utility was called the "Amazing SmartObject Utility" and was available on K2 Underground - blackmarket.  With version 0807 it is installed with the K2 server components in the folder ...\blackpearl\servicebroker\SmartObject Service Tester.exe

2. Drill down to your desired smartobject

3. Right click on it and select “To Sodx”

4. Provide a location and name for the generated SODX file

5. You should now have the SODX at that location.
