I think it's important to break it all back to 1st principles - when "positioning" SmartObjects. There are some great advantages depending on business/technical factors. Simply put - just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD. (the most "at-hand" technology may not always the best choice) - then again, it can be exactly what's needed - depending....

For developers, and ISV's Microsoft has introduced Windows Workflow Foundation as part of the .Net framework version 3 Windows Workflow Foundation a programming model/ framework for building workflows into your applications. The goal of WF is to provide a general framework that supports workflow, and make it a standard part of the Windows environment. "

So a key thing to note is that unlike the other three technologies in the .NET 3.0 Wave (WCF, WPF and CardSpace) WF is VERY ISV centric. There is a significant amount of effort involved to put together a WF host that approaches anything production readty. Yes, there are some good places to use parts of it, StateMachine flows for UI control and a favourite of mine, the rules engine, but as a general rule most developers will be using WF as embodied in a 3rd party host.

That's typically going to be MOSS, MSCRM or K2 at the moment.

One of the key drivers for MSFT in producing WF was to provide a .NET based toolset for their own product divisions (who are largely treated like any other large ISV by DevDiv). Hence the nmove of MOSS and MSCRM to WF. And we'll see WF as the core for BiozTalk.net and Oslo as well.

Chris, a run through of the MSCRM 4.0 implementation of WF would probably be useful too. Ping me if you think that'd be useful.
